Project Summary:
Innovations for Poverty Action Bangladesh is seeking qualified
applicants for the position of Data Analyst to work across various
projects that are evaluating the demand for and the impact of numerous
interventions being conducted with a sample of large exporting firms.
Position Summary:
The projects receive production data from the firms that are
participating in the studies. These data are in various different
formats (written, pdf, word, excel) and the meaning of the data as well
as the format varies hugely from firm to firm. The key task of the Data
Analyst is to follow and improve on the strategy developed by the Data
Team in order to harmonize these disparate data sources into one large
data set. This involves extracting data using a variety of tools, and
merging those data into a rigid format for analysis. In order to do
this, a deep understanding of what the data represent is critical.
This is an extremely demanding task and requires a candidate who can use a variety of technologies
such as:
• Python/Pandas
• VBA
• PDF Readers
• OCR Software
• In-house data extraction programs (written in python)
The Data Analyst will be working as a member of the Data Team, which is
currently made-up of three friendly, intelligent, experienced
programmers, and a dynamic Data Team Manager. The team delivers
demanding work in a relatively relaxed environment.
Qualifications:
Programming in python and an ability to work with the Pandas library in
particular is essential. However, it is recognized that very few
applicants will already possess these skills, so candidates with
experience programming in another language will be considered. If
applicants can demonstrate an aptitude for programming then some time
will be given to the applicant in order that python and pandas can be
mastered. This job would ideally suit graduates from the following
disciplines:
• Computer Science
• Engineering
• Economics
Together with programming skills the following requirements are identified:
• Fluency in English
• Experience working in a team
• Ability to thrive under pressure
• Demonstrated interest in learning new skills
